Life Lessons I’ve Learned

Hey Linda 😀 i think you are a very inspirational person! do you mind sharing with us your top major life lessons that u have learnt from ur past experiences. thanks 🙂

1. Career

Truthfully, it took me 4-5 years to realize what I wanted to do and I have my subbies to thank for that. Ever since I could remember, I wanted to be a part of Canada’s Justice System (whether it meant becoming a lawyer or a paralegal). However, Youtube has changed my life. Specifically speaking, my followers and subscribers have changed my life. In my previous post, What excites you about your generation? I talked about career changes and choices. If you can spare 5mins, read it! Then you will understand why I think it’s an important life lesson. I knew I wanted to make an impact on the world, but it took a lot of courage to step out of my comfort zone and go for what I’m passionate about. Literally, I spent the past 6 years devoted to Legal Studies. It was frightening, but I’m so happy that I made the decision to go into Business and Marketing/Management. To reiterate from my previous post, “Enjoy what you do. Throughout your lifetime, you should make career choices and many career changes. Do what makes you genuinely happy, and do not be afraid to make career changes.”

2. Education

This goes hand-in-hand with my previous paragraph. It took me 4-5 years to realize that education is not the only way for us to become successful in life. Yes, it plays an important role in life but experience do speak louder than your GPA. If two people had a 3.0 GPA, how will the employer determine which one of the two is a better fit for the company? Experience, personality, etc. One could be educated, but it is does not necessarily mean that he will be successful unless he puts his heart and soul into achieving what he wants. Education does, however, boost your chances of becoming successful but it isn’t an end in itself. Education will provide you with a base, a strong, and solid foundation but it is completely up to you to build upon it.

Granted, if you’re looking to go to Grad School then grades are important because of the admission standards.

3. Relationships

Gosh, I cannot stress how difficult but rewarding it is to maintain relationships. Whether it’s a with family member, friend, or significant other. I learned that no matter how much you fight with your family, you will always love them. I can’t even begin to explain how painful it was to have unreasonably strict parents, who could not merge their culture with the Western culture. However, I learned that it’s unreasonable because I’m different–I’m more westernised than they are.  No one is to blame, but I had to learn to be very, very patient with how they are and I know that they are only trying to ‘protect’ me. Never do anything to break your parents’ heart because they’re the ones who will stay by your side, no matter what.

Friends and significant others. Frankly, I treat them the same. Both require good communication, trust, patience, etc. Be there for your friend and significant other. I don’t think one should be significantly more important than the other. If my friend needed to talk to me, I’ll spend time with him/her. Don’t become one of those people who falls head over heels over their boyfriend/girlfriend and spend every minute with them. It’s not cute, it ruins friendships and relationship. Everybody needs some lovin’ (:

In conclusion, these may be generic or obvious for some of you. However, life can become so hectic that we start living in the moment and start taking people for granted.

I hope this reminds each and every one of you that life is short. Live each day like it’s your last! Make a long-lasting impression, be proud of what yourself.

1. Do you remember your first love? If so, please share a little bit about him/her?

I met my first love in Gr. 9 🙂 We were really shy, heh.

I believe we dated for about a year and a half. It didn’t work because were too young to know any better. We didn’t know how to communicate properly but we both loved each other whole-heartedly. We were always there for each other 🙂

2. What is one thing that happened during 2013 that you’ll never forget?

I have a terrible memory, so I’m going to talk about what happened in December ._.; Heh. I’ll never forget the importance of not taking someone for granted. My boyfriend and I temporarily drifted apart because we were so focused on ourselves since we’re very career-oriented, studious, etc. If I had not realized it any sooner, I would have lost a really important person. I can’t stress how important it is to communicate, express your emotions, etc. I’m glad we’re not putting each other over our goals, but I won’t forget how painful it is to experience someone slowly drifting away and not realizing it until it felt like there was a brick wall in-between us.

3. Are you looking forward to anything in 2014? If so, what is it?

In January, I looked forward to graduating. Since I’ve graduated, I’m looking forward to improving my skills :’) So, I’m considering on pursuing further education later on in the year. Specifically speaking, in Marketing Management! I also want to work for another company, possibly within the United States (FINGERS CROSSED). Los Angeles or New York, please #hireme

ALSO. I’m making travel plans with my boyfriend, so that’s another thing I’m looking forward to :’) Lastly, I want to save as much as I can so I can pay off my tuition. Heh.

4. If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Okay. This is so hard because if I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life then my body lacks in nutrients TT_TT Meaning, I’ll end up dying early because I’m malnourished 😦 So, I’ll go with what I’m currently craving for..

Ice cream. Fuck.

5. Pick a book that you think everyone HAS to read.

;_; I’M SORRY. I DON’T READ…
I read a lot of textbooks though, but I suppose that does not count since it’s mandatory.

6. What’s one song that you hear that makes you cry/want to cry?

Yoon Gun – Love Too Much (사랑해도너무나)

7. Another song that puts you in a good, happy mood.

Currently? NS Yoon-G(NS 윤지) _ Yasisi(야시시) So addicting *-*;… she’s so beautiful.

8. A place you want to travel to and explore?

Aw, I wish I was on my Macbook Pro so I can upload my bucket list 😦
There isn’t one place that comes to my mind, but multiple.

  • Italy, Japan, London, England, Paris, Philippines, South Korea, and many more *-*

9. What is your favourite board game/card game?

Psh. MONOPOLY.

10. What is that one random, small object, or small that is linked to a happy memory?

I don’t have it on me, but it’s a hand lotion that I bought from Bath & Body works 3 years ago. I met my boyfriend in October, which is the cold and dry weather/season. I don’t know why but the scent of this hand lotion reminds me of when my boyfriend and I first met ^^ Specifically speaking, him and the place he lived at in 2nd year. It’s so nostalgic every time I use it. It even gives me butterflies, heh.

11. How has Tumblr changed your life? (If it has…) Better or for worse?

Truthfully, if it was not for Tumblr — I wouldn’t be a foodie or a  travel enthusiast. Seeing all these pictures made me want to be there, travel there. OH. Don’t get me started with food, hah. It made me want to improve my baking and cooking skills!

My 11 questions:

1. What is one thing you will never do again?
2. Would you rather be twice as smart or twice as happy?
3. What happened the last time you cried?
4. What happened the time in your life when you were the most nervous to do something?
5. What would your parents be surprised to learn about you?

What excites you about your generation?

Let’s be honest, Generation-Y? We are a breed of our own.

Born in the mid-1980’s and later, Generation Y legal professionals are in their 20s and are just entering the workforce. With numbers estimated as high as 70 million, Generation Y (also known as the Millennials) is the fastest growing segment of today’s workforce.

I love how ambitious we are, social, and itching to make an impact. We want to live a meaningful and purposeful life.

You’re probably wondering, “Where is she going with this?”

Hi! It’s been a while :’) In case you did not know, I recently graduated and I’m currently working full-time as a Marketing and Communications Analyst. I LOVE IT!

I’ll be honest though, I’m not too fond of the top-down leadership style. Seriously? It’s 2014. It’s all about open-concept work spaces that promote engagement between all workers – regardless of their seniority. It’s no longer an exception, but the norm. What’s with these cubicles, walls, closed doors, and even assigned desks? I may not be pleased, but I love the experience. It allows me to know what I want and don’t want in a workplace. For now, I’ll enjoy my cubicle :’) ’cause I probably won’t be working in this sort of environment after 8 months, heh.

..and that’s the great part about Gen Y. Job hopping is the ‘new normal’ for Gen Y. Supposedly, ninety-one percent of Gen Y are expected to stay in a job for less than two to three years. You know what? I completely agree. I don’t want to be “stuck” at a company that  does not embrace the work-life blend, does not have a positive culture, or focuses on presence more than performance. I want to experience and explore. Why? A great part of our life is devoted to our career-choices/decisions.

I used to dislike it when my teachers told us, “Do what you love in life and our careers!” I kept on thinking, what? Well, I would not make ‘a lot’ of money if I did what I love. Wrong. First of all, it is subjective on what ‘a lot’ of money is. More money does not mean more happiness. If anything, it is temporary happiness. Family, friends, boyfriend/girlfriend, and enjoying what you do gives you long-lasting happiness. I rather do what I love and strive to excel at what I love doing (which equates to an increase in income overtime) than do what I hate and make ‘a lot’ of money.

So, embrace it! Enjoy what you do. Throughout your lifetime, you should make career choices and many career changes. Do what makes you genuinely happy, and do not be afraid to make career changes. Do not settle for a company because you think no other company will hire you, etc. Life’s too short to settle in on anything :’)
